I would like to welcome you to the Director’s Blog. This electronic outlet will provide me with the opportunity to provide updates and information of the new Peabody-Lynnfield YMCA. In the upcoming weeks, as we begin the countdown to its opening, I will bring you information on this state of the art facility, its programming, the people involved with its creation and operation, and all the details of membership, hours, schedules, and of course the exact date the doors will open. Through words and pictures you will often get an upfront view at a new YMCA. I promise you this, you will be WOWED by the new Peabody-Lynnfield YMCA.
I was on sight to see the original YMCA building demolished exactly eleven months ago. As I watched the heavy machinery reduce the building to rubble in a matter of minutes, I recalled the vast array of programming that went on in that small cinder block building. Built in 1967, the complex was originally designed to be an outdoor pool center, base for the summer day camp, and youth center. In the early 1970’s the gymnasium was constructed, with the final expansion of a second floor childcare center in 1982. As those walls tumbled to the ground, I must admit a lump formed in my throat. I grew up at that YMCA; my family was one of the first members of the summer pool, a membership we enjoyed year after year. My first job was as the pool window attendant at the age of thirteen. Those experiences laid the foundation that would later influence my career choice of becoming a YMCA director. Now after some twenty years, I feel like I am coming home.
Of course a few improvements and upgrades have been made to the home. Now, thirteen months since the day of watching the Y torn down, that lump on my throat has been replace with this incredible excitement of what this new facility will be able to offer to the youth, adults and families of this community.
So get ready and stay tuned as I have the distinct pleasure and honor of introducing you to your new YMCA. The countdown begins!
